ROMAN SPINEL INTAGLIO DEPICTING CRAB IN GOLD RING

Ca. AD 1 - 200. A Roman gold finger ring with a slender, rounded hoop and a prominent circular bezel set with a dark-coloured engraved gemstone. The intaglio depicts a crab surrounding engraved details. The polished gold setting provides a striking contrast with the dark surface of the stone. Size: D:15.09mm / US: 4 / UK: H 1/2; Weight: 3.8g Provenance: Private UK collection, acquired on the UK art market; previously in a Private London collection; acquired in France in the early 2000s; formerly in a Swiss private collection formed in the 1980s and 1990s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. This item is accompanied by Birmingham Assay Office, UK centre for Diamond, Gemstone & Perl reports, including stone-testing confirmation of spinel. It also comes with an XRF analysis report, confirming ancient repair. The XRF analyses performed demonstrate that the compositional profile of the metal is consistent with, and technically compatible with, documented metallic compositions of objects from the attributed historical period, thereby providing substantial material support for the object’s authenticity.
