Romano-Egyptian bronze fine Serapis bust, 12,8 cm -Spanish Export

Hollow cast with a full beard, long moustache and hair with characteristic wavy locks on the foreahead, surmonunted by a conical modius engraved with olove springs. The drapped bust supported on acanthus leaves. It is possible that the eyes were once inlaid. A casting fault under the beard on the proper left hand side. The cult of Serapis was introduced into the Egyptian pantheon in the 3rd century BC by Ptolemy I in an attempt to unify the Egyptian god Osiris and the sacred Apis Bull. *Green patina with azurites under the chin Provenance: Gustave Mustaki, Alexandria, Egypt; exported from Egypt to the UK under licence c. 1950 / Elsa MacLellan, Portsmouth, UK; by descent from the above private collection, London, UK / C.
