Romantic Antique Pendant With Pearls & Glass Pastes in Gold, c. 1890

The necklace presented here, a long pendant on a delicate chain, playfully reveals the romantic side of earlier generations. The pendant consists of several tiered elements. It begins with a delicate, curved design, at the centre of which sits a pearl. Two small chains on the right and left sides lead to a flower adorned with additional pearls, whose blossom is formed by a red glass paste. Suspended from this are two hearts. A tapestry of fine, tiny pearls stretches across the hearts, whose centres are each adorned with three glass pastes in blue and red. Quite fittingly, they form the heart of the pendant. The heart is indispensable to human life. Yet it sometimes happens that one loses their heart to someone and metaphorically whispers, “My heart belongs to you!” In eras when people could hardly express their feelings openly, they often spoke through flowers and jewellery. Who, one wonders, had gifted their heart to the lady who wore this piece over 130 years ago? We have complemented the delicate pendant, dating from around 1890, with a modern gold chain, making it wearable once again today.
