Rosemarie Trockel (*1952, Germany) From “Für Freunde und Förderer,” 2004 Heliogravure | Edition Griffelkunst A characteristic sheet from Rosemarie Trockel’s 2004 work created for the Griffelkunst Association Hamburg, part of the œuvre group “Für Freunde und Förderer.” Trockel belongs to the leading figures of German contemporary art. Her work is marked by the deliberate combination of seemingly opposed elements: the familiar meets irritation, the everyday meets the conceptual, reduced forms with multilayered meanings. In this piece, the special quality of the heliogravure print is particularly central. The fine tonal gradations and the restrained color palette give the sheet a quiet, intense presence. Rather than pressing itself upon the viewer, the work develops its effect upon closer inspection – precisely the tension between distance and proximity that makes Trockel’s works so distinctive. The sheet originates from the edition issued by the Griffelkunst Association Hamburg in 2004. The group comprises five heliogravures in total; the sheet offered here is a single work from this series and not the full portfolio. The five works were printed on Somerset paper and carried out in different formats.
