However, the hardness of diamond varies with crystallographic direction (anisotropy). This makes it possible to grind diamond with diamond. In the diamond powder used for this purpose, crystals are oriented in every direction (statistical isotropy), so the hardest among them always acts on the surface to be ground. Diamond is optically isotropic with a high refractive index and high dispersion. It exhibits fluorescence and phosphorescence and is triboelectric.
