Roxie Paine (American, b. 1966), S2-P2-O19 (from the Scumak Series)

Circa 2001, low density pigmented polyethylene, incised number S2-P2-O19 to the underside. 19 x 26 x 23 in. Collection of Sydney and Frances Lewis, Richmond, Virginia Artist Roxy Paine was born in 1966 in New York. Roxy was educated at the College of Santa Fe (now Santa Fe University of Art and Design) in New Mexico and the Pratt Institute in New York. Described in a 1999 New York Times review as “sculptural blobs… of unpremeditated expressionism,” works from the Scumak series explore the boundaries of artist made vs. machine made. Works are created by machines that heat colored polyethylene beads which are then dispensed on a conveyor belt in the form of layered sculptures. Scumak' is an 'Auto Sculpture Maker' and is programmed to pour liquid plastic coloured with pigment across an appliance and on to a base at different intervals. Sculptures are produced on a production line, but no two are the same. In spite of the mechanical production and without the intervention of the artist, the objects created before the viewer's eyes are one of a kind. Since 1989, his work has been internationally exhibited and is included in collections such as Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA, Museum of Modern Art, NY, Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C., National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, and the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. He is the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. He has permanently sited works at the Olympic Sculpture Park, Seattle, WA, National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas and the Wanas Foundation, Sweden. Paine is represented by Kasmin in NYC and Kavi Gupta Chicago | Berlin. He lives and works in New York. Some dust soiling; minor surface marks to the underside.
