Saint of the Order of Jerusalem in prayer, Italian, 18th century

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions 144 x 90 / 130 x 107 cm. Devotional image of a Carthusian monk bent in deep contemplation before a table covered with a red cloth, upon which rest a crucifix, books, a skull, and scourges—attributes of meditation on death and penance. The white habit, rendered with ample, luminous folds, contrasts with the dark background and focuses attention on the monk’s absorbed expression and the silent contemplation of the scene. The composition reflects an ascetic spirituality rooted in the Baroque period, which persisted into later years, with a carefully crafted theatricality and a powerful introspective quality. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
