Samuel Taylor Coleridge; Willy Pogany - The Rime of the...

Magnificent and scarce copy of the celebrated Art Nouveau illustrated edition of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's masterpiece, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, presented by the famous Hungarian illustrator Willy Pogány. Published in London by George G. Harrap & Co. in 1910, this is the editor's rare deluxe burgundy suede binding with yapp edges and gilt lettering/decoration on the front cover—notably rarer and more desirable than the standard green cloth edition. The book is an absolute masterpiece of Edwardian book design. Unpaginated (approx. 144 leaves), it features a monumental artistic production entirely designed by Pogány: 20 stunning tipped-in colour plates mounted on grey stock with textured borders (printed by Bemrose Dalziel Ltd.), a beautiful polychrome illuminated title page, and dozens of two-colour and black-and-white illustrations. The entire calligraphic text, decorative borders, and illuminated initials were meticulously drawn by the artist to emulate a medieval manuscript.Condition Report:Binding: Showing age. The original suede shows wear and rubbing, particularly to the spine joints/seams, which are weak and barely attached—a very common frailty for Harrap's suede bindings from this era. Minor wear to spine ends.Interior: In very good/excellent condition. The text pages and all 20 colour plates remain exceptionally clean, bright, and free from the heavy foxing that usually plagues this edition. Original illustrated endpapers intact. Top edge gilt, others uncut.Technical Details:Format: Large 4to (approx. Guardas ilustradas originales.
