San Sebastian Red Seated Male Smoker Figure on Stool

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, San Sebastian Red style. A burnished red-slipped figure of a nude man seated on a two-legged stool, with his right hand raised to his mouth as if smoking. His left hand rests on his bent knee, and his genitals are openly modeled. Rows of raised pellets cover both shoulders and the upper arms, likely showing ceremonial scarification. The long head has the hallmarks of the style: coffee-bean eyes, a sharp hooked nose, and finely striated hair with a beaded crest running down the center. His only ornaments are coiled earrings. Faint traces of black resist decoration in geometric patterns remain on the chest and the stool legs. Smoking scenes like this are generally read as showing ritual intoxication, perhaps tied to shamanic or status-linked practice. Hollow figures like this one were made for the shaft tombs of West Mexico. These were deep vertical shafts that led down to chambers cut into the bedrock, where families buried their dead with ceramic companions over several generations. Scholars name the San Sebastian Red substyle after the area around San Sebastian in Jalisco. It is known for its deep, glossy red slip, long heads with sharply cut faces, and an interest in body ornament, including raised scarification and resist-painted designs. Seated men holding a hand or small object to the mouth are a recurring type in West Mexican tomb sculpture. Researchers often link them to tobacco or other plant substances used in ritual, and seating the figure on a stool may mark him as a person of rank. Item # 205656
