Paris: Chez l’Autheur et Chez Pierre Mariette, 1658 [but 1659].[1] First edition. Here is what AI says it’s worth: $97,600. Folio (17 ¼” x 12 5/8”, 438mm x 320mm): Α2 [Aij signed]. 4 leaves, pp. [4] (title, blank, 2pp. table). With 113 double-page engraved maps, hand-colored in outline. Collated complete against the table (albeit with two pairs of plates swapped). Bound in XIXc quarter sheep over purple marbled boards. On the spine, 6 raised bands. Title gilt to the third panel. Rubbed generally, with wear to the extremities. Scattered soiling and some marginal light tanning throughout. The map of “Germania Antiqua” (fifth from last) damp-stained. Upper margin of “Gallia Vetus” (sixth from last) restored. With ink numbering to the verso (and, in a few cases, the recto) of the maps, largely in a single old hand. Nicolas Sanson (born in Abbeville, 1600–1667) — the father of French cartography — was cartographer to Louis XIV. He shared the copyright with Pierre Mariette for this seminal French atlas (“le premier atlas mondial français,” Pastoreau p. 400), first published in 1652 (70 maps, without a title) and incrementally augmented in the succeeding years. The present edition is the first to contain the full complement of 113 maps. Though the Dutch had dominated atlas production from the late XVIc, Sanson with the Cartes generales reclaimed for the French a relevance in the cartographic sphere they had lacked since the death of Oronce Finé in 1555. As French explorers’ accounts filtered back into France — especially from North America — French maps came to surpass Dutch maps in their accuracy and information. The present atlas contains, in addition to the five general maps, a dozen maps of the America, all showing California as an island, and the “Mappe-Monde” of 1651 being one of the earliest depictions of the five Great Lakes. Pastoureau, Sanson V A 1658; Phillips 4260. [1] The map of Westphalia is dated 1659, and is included in the contents.
