Reference: Göbl, Sasanian Numismatics, Type II/3. Khusro II (591–628 AD) ruled the Sasanian Empire at its greatest territorial extent. After regaining his throne with Byzantine support, he later launched a vast war against Byzantium, capturing Syria, Egypt and much of Anatolia. Emperor Heraclius eventually reversed these gains and invaded Persia. Khusro was deposed and killed in 628 AD, after which the empire entered a rapid period of instability before the Arab conquests.
