White shirt unbuttoned, tie loosened, belt still fastened: the night is over, or it never really began. At the foot of the sofa, two polished shoes sit on the parquet, abandoned in a heap. The painting captures the moment afterward, when one no longer knows if one is asleep or pretending. The gesture of the arm, the counterpart of the hand reaching toward the floor, the mess of fabrics: everything seems to fall softly, without a sound. One thinks of Sargent interiors and the late-night rooms in Fitzgerald’s novels. An image of fatigue and freedom, where disorder becomes a form of grace.
