Until 2015, these animals were mistakenly attributed to the African sister species Pugilina morio. Only anatomical and genetic studies by malacologists Abbate and Simone proved that this is an independent West Atlantic species. It was named in honor of the indigenous Brazilian tribe Tupiniquim. Life habits & habitat: These marine predatory snails are typical inhabitants of mangrove systems, estuaries (river mouths) and shallow tidal zones. They live on fine sand and mud substrates at water depths from 0 to 2 meters. There they feed primarily as scavengers (necrophages) on dead organic material or hunt other mollusks.
