Scientific rarity in perfection: Pugilina tupiniquim (93 mm) in GEM quality For discerning taxonomy collectors and lovers of neotropical marine fauna: For sale is an absolutely flawless shell of Tupiniquim-Melone (Pugilina tupiniquim). This 93 mm long specimen impresses with its sculptural elegance and is in rare GEM condition. The deep chocolate-brown to chestnut-brown coloration contrasts wonderfully with the distinctive light spiral bands. Each whorl is perfectly preserved, the spiral cordage stands out plastically, and the predatory snail-type elongated aperture shows no damage. Things worth knowing, life habits & origin: The species & discovery: Pugilina tupiniquim has a fascinating scientific history. Until 2015 these animals were mistakenly attributed to the African sister species Pugilina morio. Only anatomical and genetic studies by malacologists Abbate and Simone demonstrated that it is a distinct western Atlantic species. It was named in honor of the indigenous Brazilian tribe Tupiniquim. Life habits & habitat: These marine predatory snails are typical inhabitants of mangrove systems, estuaries, and shallow tidal zones. They live on fine sand- and mud-bearing bottoms at water depths of 0 to 2 meters. There they feed primarily as scavengers (nekrophages) on dead organic material or hunt other mollusks. In life, the shell is often covered by a thick dark velvety periostracum. Origin: This collector’s piece comes from the tropical coastal regions of Brazil Shipping as insured package via DHL Sale and shipping only within the EU SKU divers/none - Pugilina tupiniquim
