Scottish Landscape with a Ruined Abbey. Anglo-Saxon School. 19th Century

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 47 x 47 cm. Atmospheric view of a river landscape dominated by the ruins of an ancient Gothic abbey covered in vegetation, located at the foot of a hillside and reflected in calm waters. A small boat anchored on the bank suggests a human presence, lending scale and life to the composition. The wide, dynamic sky occupies a large part of the canvas and balances the whole with luminous clouds that merge with the horizon. The brushwork is loose and vaporous, with chromatic transparencies evoking early 19th-century English landscape painting, influenced by Turner and Romantic aesthetics. The diffused light and the melancholic depiction of the ruin transform this work into a pictorial meditation on the passage of time and the beauty of abandonment. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
