Sculpture, Heilig Hart van Jezus - 62.5 cm - Plaster, paint

Antique/vintage Holy Heart of Jesus statue – 62.5 cm – polychrome plaster – model 404 – probably 1920–1960 Beautiful large religious statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, made of polychrome painted plaster, with a height of no less than 62.5 cm. The statue depicts Jesus Christ in a blessing and welcoming pose, with both arms outstretched and the palms facing upward. On the chest is the characteristic Sacred Heart, rendered in red with a crown of thorns, flames, and a gold-colored rays crown. Jesus wears a richly draped, gold-yellow garment with carefully worked folds and a belt around the waist. The statue rests on a rectangular, green and dark-painted pedestal. The face, the flowing hair, the beard and the detailed clothing give the statue its distinctive appearance. Age and provenance - Suspected period: circa 1920–1960 - Country of origin: unknown, possibly Belgium, France, or the Netherlands - Manufacturer/workshop: not identified - Style: traditional Christian devotional art - Material: polychrome painted, cast plaster - Model number: 404 At the back of the garment, lower right and just above the pedestal, there is the clearly indented number 404. This is probably a model or mold number applied during manufacture. Despite research, the number could not yet be reliably linked to a specific manufacturer or sculptor. The design and execution fit traditional religious statue production from the first half to the mid-20th century. An exact dating has not been established. Special construction – separately removable hands An interesting feature of this statue is the original construction with two separately manufactured and removable hands. Both hands have cylindrical connectors that slide directly into the corresponding round openings of the sleeves. No glue, screw, or metal fastener is required. Both hands are present, fit into their respective openings, and can be removed separately. One hand fits a little more firmly than the other. This construction appears to be original to the manufacturing process and is not an indication that the hands have broken off. Stability and visible flaws The statue is in authentic vintage condition, with signs of age and use that befit its probable age. The following details are explicitly noted: - Localized loss of the original paint and finish - Visible paint wear on the hands, fingers, and connectors - Surface wear and small damage to the feet - Paint loss and small damages to the edges and corners of the pedestal - Local discolorations and signs of use on the garment - On one hand there is a metal reinforcement and a crack line visible. A prior repair cannot be excluded. - The underside of the pedestal shows clear signs of age, paint loss, and a round opening The statue has not been repainted or restored by the current owner. The original appearance and visible signs of age are preserved. The photos are an integral part of the description and show the actual condition, including the present damage and wear.
