Sculpture, Modello anatomico di piede femminile - 30 cm - Plaster

Academic plaster model – Foot study inspired by Antonio Canova’s Hebe – Neoclassicism Type: educational plaster model / cast Subject: detailed study of the foot and the lower portion of the limb Iconographic reference: Canova’s Hebe Material: modelling and casting plaster Scope: academic, instructional, study of Classical and Neoclassical sculpture Height: approximately 30 cm Weight: approximately 1.8 kg Condition: good/excellent, with normal irregularities and small surface abrasions typical of plaster handling and movement. Description An interesting academic plaster model depicting a human foot with strong plastic rendering, including the lower portion of the leg and mounted on a solid integrated circular base. The piece belongs to the tradition of teaching plasters used in sculpture study, where a specific anatomical detail was isolated from the context of the full figure to allow the student to analyze proportions, joints, volumetric relationships, structure and surface treatment separately. The modeling presents a clearly classicist and neoclassical setup, characterized by the search for balance of mass, simplification of surfaces and the idealized definition of the shapes of the foot and ankle. The model is particularly interesting for its iconographic relationship with Canova’s Hebe, a celebrated example of the artist’s neoclassical exploration of the human body and the grace of form. The original Hebe was conceived by Canova in plaster and constitutes one of the most significant cases of Canovan sculpture methodology: the plaster model indeed represented a fundamental phase in the process leading to the marble version. This specimen should therefore be interpreted as an academic model inspired by or derived from Canova’s repertoire, and not as an original model personally produced by Antonio Canova. In the absence of provenance documentation, signature, gipsoteca stamp, or other attribution, it would not be correct to assign it directly to the artist’s workshop. Particularly significant is the fact that the subject is isolated to the anatomico-sculptural portion useful for study. This mode is consistent with the teaching tradition of plaster rooms and academies, where casts allowed students to practice observing and reproducing the details of ancient and modern sculpture. The Canova tradition itself documents the importance of plaster as a technical and didactic phase of sculpture production. For example, the Canova Museum describes the creation of plaster models and the possibility of producing multiple copies from a single form. Technical characteristics The piece features: - three-dimensional, full-round modeling; - uniformly white surface, typical of instructional plaster; - idealized rendering of anatomy; - attention to the volumetric transition between leg, ankle and foot; - individual definition of the toes; - circular base intended for stabilization and display; - evident didactic-academic vocation. The surface shows small marks, porosity, irregularities and abrasions, consistent with the material’s nature and with handmade plaster work. From the available photographs, no elements are observed that would compromise the overall legibility of the model. Collecting interest The piece may be particularly interesting for collectors of: academic plasters · sculptural casts · Neoclassicism · Antonio Canova · plaster rooms · history of artistic teaching · didactic models for sculptors · artistic anatomy · classical sculpture. It is also a decorative object with strong museum-like character, especially suitable for studies, studios, libraries, art spaces and collections of plaster casts.
