Emilian School, 17th century Bolognese milieu, close to Giovanni Andrea Sirani and Carlo Cignani “ Venus with Love and the Dove ” Bologna, ca. 1655–1670 Oil on canvas Dimensions: In frame 87 x 77 cm Canvas: 58.5 x 49 cm Description A refined allegorical-mythological composition depicting a young Venus in half figure, accompanied by Love, who emerges from the shadow behind her, and by the dove, the traditional attribute of the goddess. The protagonist, with small white flowers in her hair, is built through delicate modelling of the flesh tones, enlivened by rosy cheeks and set in strong contrast with the dark background. The work appears to be attributable to the Bolognese painting culture of the mid-17th century, still deeply marked by Guido Reni’s legacy and developed in the generation of Giovanni Andrea and Elisabetta Sirani and Carlo Cignani. The type of the female face, the soft chiaroscuro and the elegant allegorical characterization particularly suggest a placement within the Sirani-Cignani circle, roughly between 1655 and 1670. Frame The work is presented within an impressive carved and gilded wooden frame from the 18th century, characterized by a rich Baroque ornamental repertoire with vegetal, foliate and phytomorphic motifs, with pronounced plastic elements at the corners and along the profiles. The frame shows physiological signs of time, gilding wear, small gaps and traces of conservation interventions. Condition report The painting presents in good overall conservation condition, compatible with its age. From examination the support appears affected by a previous lining/relining intervention and mounted on an expandable wooden stretcher with keys, presumably not original. The painted surface shows craquelure compatible with aging of materials, some abrasions and surface inconsistencies, more noticeable in the dark areas. The varnish appears relatively consistent and shows reflections and inconsistencies; old cleaning and retouching interventions are plausible. *** Note fotografica Some photographs of the work were taken with professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better readability of the composition, details and the painting surface.
