Scuola Fiamminga (XIX) - Paesaggio con Pastori

"Wooded Landscape with Shepherds", oil on canvas, 94x125 cm with frame, 82x112 cm the canvas alone, signature indecipherable at the lower right, Flemish school, datable to the middle of the 19th century. The painting depicts an idyllic rural scene set along a dirt path running along the edge of a dense thicket. In the foreground on the right, under the shade of ancient trees with gnarled trunks, unfolds the narrative core of the work with three rural figures caught in a moment of rest and conversation: a shepherd standing with a red jacket leaning on his staff, a woman seated with a bonnet and white blouse engaged in dialogue, and a second man semi-reclining on the ground beside wicker baskets and bundles. A little further to the left a two-wheeled wooden agricultural cart stands at rest, drawn by a pair of horses, one white in the foreground and one bay in the background, while along the path that winds into the depths a small flock of sheep preceded by a traveler can be seen. On the left, the landscape opens onto a mirror of placid water framed by reeds, a broken trunk on which perches a bird, and a tree acting as a lateral screen, allowing a glimpse of sunlit rustic cottages with that straw roofs in the distant quiet of the rural scene. From a compositional standpoint, the work is built according to a classic diagonal schema that contrasts the monumental, shadowy mass of the right-hand trees with the bright, atmospheric opening of the landscape on the left, guiding the observer’s gaze along the curve of the path toward the horizon. The brushwork is fine, descriptive, and vibrant, particularly evident in the analytical rendering of the foliage—constructed through dense, overlapping strokes that give volume to the leaves—as well as in the calligraphic drawing of the aquatic vegetation in the foreground and in the lively definition of the figures. The color scheme is orchestrated through a careful chiaroscuro contrast between the warm, earthy tones of the forest, dominated by deep browns, dark greens, and golden accents on the tree canopies, and the cool, crystalline tones of blues and turquoises that pervade the sky and reflect in the flowing water. In this palette of natural tones stand knowledgeable touches of local color—the vivid red of the shepherd’s jacket and the bright whites of the horse and the woman’s clothing—that pace the scene and capture the light in the foreground. Placed in the context of mid-19th-century Flemish production, the canvas testifies to the popularity of the romantic-naturalist landscape which, in that era, nostalgically recovered illustrious models from the Nordic Seicento tradition, from Gillis van Coninxloo to Jan Brueghel to genre scenes by David Teniers the Younger. From this artistic heritage the author reinterprets the scenographic layout of the *sous-bois* (the shaded undergrowth punctuated by distant light) and the taste for the *staffage*, translating them, however, according to a fully nineteenth-century sensibility, softer and more sentimental. The resulting poetry celebrates an unspoiled, harmonious rural Arcadia, in which human presence, small and industrious, integrates serenely into the enveloping majesty of a protective, timeless nature. CONDITION REPORT Good overall condition. The work is intact in every part with vivid and clearly legible color and brushwork. The frame is to be considered complimentary. The photo of the painting placed in an ambient setting is generated with artificial intelligence and should be regarded as purely exemplary. Only the remaining photos, which faithfully show the object and its features, are valid. Tracked and insured shipping with appropriate packing.
