“Popular festival in a tavern with dancers and a banquet“ Flemish School Period: 18th-19th century Technique: oil on panel Support: wooden panel Dimensions: 65 x 50 cm in frame Panel: 50 x 34 cm Genre: genre scene / interior of tavern / popular celebration Frame: ebony-veneered wooden frame with an inner decorated band and a gilded profile Description The composition depicts the crowded interior of a tavern or inn, animated by numerous figures arranged in small narrative clusters. The painter builds a true choral representation of popular life. In the center, the dance dominates: men and women move, holding hands, wearing brightly colored clothes — reds, greens, ochres, whites and browns — which stand out against the dark background of the surroundings. The setting is deliberately lively and theatrical. On the left, other patrons converse and drink; part of the company watches the dancers, while some characters seem to participate in music and festivity. On the right the convivial character becomes even more evident: a table laid for a meal gathers men, women and a child around foods, pitchers and vessels. Particularly interesting is the abundance of accessory elements: game and birds hung up, a hare, birds, a braid of foodstuffs, containers, fruit, tableware and victuals. At the feet of the figures, domestic animals also appear, including a dog and a cat. These details are not purely decorative: they qualify the environment as a place of abundance, consumption, celebration and sociality. Frame This is an ebony-veneered wooden frame, characterized by black consecutive mouldings and by a wide inner band decorated in red on a dark background. A fine gilded edge visually separates the frame from the painted surface, from the 19th century. Stamps on the back: Antique punch-mark on the reverse of the wooden support, of a type compatible with the markings documented on Flemish/Dutch painted panels; about the 17th century. Condition report Apparent condition from photographs: generally good, considering its age. The wooden support overall appears to maintain sufficient planarity. The paint film shows widespread craquelure, more evident in the dark areas; there are surface abrasions, scratches, small losses and wear. Some passages seem to have undergone previous conservation interventions and localized retouching or repainting cannot be excluded. *** Photographic note The photographs of the work were taken with the aid of professional studio lighting and spotlights to allow better legibility of the composition, details and painting matter.
