Scuola Fiorentina del 600 - "Santa Caterina d'Alessandria"

Florentine school, 17th century "Saint Catherine of Alexandria" Oil on canvas, 95 x 70 cm Without a frame Slight losses and period restorations Good condition of preservation Catherine of Alexandria was a Christian martyr of the 4th century. Her feast is celebrated on November 25. Her cult spread throughout Europe from the 6th century, with particular intensity between the 10th and 12th centuries. She is listed among the Holy Helpers and is invoked against sudden death. Some scholars have questioned her historicity. Although her historic existence has been questioned by a part of the Catholic Church since 1961, the saint remains listed in the Roman Martyrology — purged of legendary narratives — as an optional memory (*memoria ad libitum*).
