Scuola napoletana (XX) - L'eruzione del Vesuvio

aples School of the 20th century, The Eruption of Vesuvius, gouache, approx. 21.5x30.5 cm, initials of the author (S.P.) in the lower left (on the back there is a signature, undecipherable, whose initials match those on the front). Suggestive work depicting a typical view of Vesuvius, part of that production of paintings made as souvenirs for travelers visiting the Neapolitan city since the times of the Grand Tour in the 18th century and later becoming very prolific up to the 20th century. The painting does not depart from the artistic qualities acquired by this genre, highly recognizable for technique and subjects, often depicting, as in this piece, Vesuvius in eruption with vivid colors and strong chromatic contrasts with the sky and sea that reflect its luminous glow, hence very decorative. In good condition, no conservation issues: the sheet, protected by glass, is slightly smaller than the light of the frame, which appears to be coeval with the dating of the work; on the back, there is a further retention glass, which presents a composite crack: this glass is well held by the fixing nails and is therefore left in respect of the originality of the object. Photographs are an integral part of the description. The frame, which measures 33.5x43x3.5 cm, does not affect the assessment of the work and is to be considered included as a courtesy. Due to its function and the very nature of the materials that compose it, any damage during shipping cannot be ruled out and will not be a valid reason for a claim or order cancellation. The utmost care is guaranteed for careful packaging, trackable shipping. For some destinations, shipping costs and times may be higher than the base indicated, due to locations less accessible to shipping services.
