Adam and Eve. Thin oil on paper affixed to panel, 45 by 62 cm. The Roman School is defined as an heterogeneous group of painters active in Rome from the 1920s to the 1940s of the 20th century. The expression, in French 'jeune École de Rome', was coined by critic George Waldemar in the introduction to the catalog of an exhibition held in 1933 by the painters Corrado Cagli, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Emanuele Cavalli and Ezio Sclavi at the Galerie Bonjean in Paris. Subsequently, criticism will embrace this definition, broadening it to include other artists active in the capital in the same period, although belonging to styles and artistic aims very different from one another, such as those of the so-called "Via Cavour School".
