SEBASTIAN PETHER (BRITISH 1790-1844) A MOONLIT LANDSCAPE WITH A WATERMILL Oil on panel Signed and indistinctly dated '1836[?]' (lower centre) 41 x 51.5cm (16 x 20¼in.) Provenance: Sale, Christie's, London, Important English Pictures, 23 March 1979, lot 60 Sale, Christie's, London, English Pictures, 18 October 1985, lot 67A Condition Report: A horizontal crack of approximately 12cm is present to the lower left corner. Scuffs and abrasions to the edges commensurate with rubbing to the frame. A small loss is present to the upper extreme edge, approximately 8cm from the upper left corner. Fine craquelure is present across the image but the surface appears to be largely stable. Inspection under UV reveals several areas of retouching, including to the lower right corner, left edge and along the aforementioned crack, as well as to the shoreline, moon, clouds, boat, figures and the ruined castle. Further strengthening is present to the cottage and trees. The image presents a layer of surface dirt and a cloudy varnish.
