Shark - Fossil tooth - Parotodus benedenii, - 6.3 cm - 4.5 cm

**Rare Parotodus benedenii (False Mako Shark) – Miocene, Sumatra, Indonesia** An exceptional and highly collectible fossil tooth of **Parotodus benedenii**, commonly known as the **False Mako Shark**, originating from **Sumatra, Indonesia**. *Parotodus benedenii* is a remarkable extinct pelagic shark species whose fossil record extends from the Oligocene into the Pliocene. Although the species has a wide geographic distribution, its teeth are considered **rare and uncommon in Neogene fossil deposits**, making well-preserved specimens particularly desirable among specialist fossil and shark-tooth collectors. The species is known for its distinctive, strongly curved crown, broad basal area and exceptionally robust root morphology. Unlike the serrated teeth of Megalodon, *Parotodus benedenii* possesses **smooth cutting edges**, giving these teeth a highly characteristic and immediately recognizable appearance. **Sumatra is a documented locality for *Parotodus benedenii***, and Miocene material from the island is specifically recorded in the scientific literature. A published specimen from the Miocene of Sumatra measures approximately 75 mm in height, demonstrating the impressive size these teeth could attain. This specimen represents a fascinating piece of Indonesia's prehistoric marine history and an excellent opportunity to acquire a relatively uncommon species that is considerably less frequently encountered on the fossil market than the more familiar Megalodon. A superb addition to a **specialist shark-tooth collection**, particularly for collectors interested in rare lamniform and otodontid fossils. **A rare predator from the Miocene seas of ancient Indonesia — millions of years old and highly distinctive.**
