Shimmering Bracelet with Amethysts in Multicoloured Gold, Featuring

This bracelet is like a day in late summer: fragrant, radiant, and warm. More than 100 amethysts shimmer in a seductive violet. They are set in reddish gold and arranged side by side in a dense pattern to form the bracelet. The large clasp, the focal point of the design, is set with a particularly large amethyst. Smaller amethysts accompany it, alternating with roses crafted from gold. The roses on the clasp are a special detail. They are crafted from gold of varying colours—green and yellow gold—which have been layered over the reddish gold of the clasp. This technique, known as en or de trois couleur, is a particularly artful way to achieve natural-looking effects. It first appeared around 1800 and then recurred repeatedly throughout the century. Flowers and leaves are most commonly crafted using this technique, as seen here: The effect is subtle, artistic, and rich in detail; pieces created in this way often possess a cheerful lightness. The clasp’s shape—an oval shield—is typical of jewellery from the 1860s and 1870s. We therefore believe that the clasp was also made during those years. The bracelet, which closely matches the clasp in both material and colour, was most likely created later as a fitting complement to the clasp. Crafted by hand with great care, details such as the modern eyelets and the method of mounting on flexible wires suggest that it was likely made in the 20th century. We discovered the bracelet in the Rhineland. We are particularly drawn to its late-summer glow.
