Highlights The Original Golf GTI Launched in 1976, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk1 transformed the compact family hatchback into a genuinely exciting performance car. Its combination of low weight, responsive handling, practicality, and accessible performance helped establish the modern hot-hatch formula. 1.6-Litre Fuel-Injected Engine The original GTI was powered by a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated inline-four engine with Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection, producing approximately 110 PS (108 hp / 81 kW). Lightweight Performance With a kerb weight of around 810 kg, the early Golf GTI offered an excellent power-to-weight ratio. Driver-Focused Engineering Front-wheel drive, compact dimensions, a lightweight body, firmer suspension, and responsive steering gave the GTI agile and entertaining handling while preserving the practicality and efficiency of the standard Golf.
