SICILIAN MARIONETTE PUPPET DEPICTING A SARACEN SOLDIER
Ca. 19th - early 20th century AD > A Sicilian marionette depicting a Saracen soldier, with an articulated body dressed in armour and patterned costume. The figure carries a sword and round shield and retains overhead control rods. Sicilian opera dei pupi dramatises tales of chivalry, especially the adventures of Charlemagne's paladins and their Saracen opponents. Armoured marionettes, skilled manipulation and oral storytelling created a popular theatrical world of honour, conflict and loyalty. > > Size: 890mm x 310mm; Weight: 4.8kg > Provenance: Prince Collection, 1990s2014. > This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. >
