[Signed] [First Edition] Seasoned Timber (inscribed to Robert Frost) Fisher

An excellent association copy, inscribed on the front free end paper: "To Robert [Frost], with every good wish, Dorothy." Uncommon signed. Fisher was a best-selling author of dozens of books, a social activist, and an educational reformer known for helping to establish Montessori in America. Eleanor Roosevelt called her one of the ten most influential women in America. See also this this article on her in The New Yorker from 2023 reasserting her importance. Robert Frost was her longtime neighbor and friend in Vermont, and their connection runs deep as this essay in The Robert Frost Review (about a letter he wrote to Fisher) describes. Fisher encouraged Henry Holt to publish North of Boston and she even first showed Frost the house that he bought in South Shaftsbury a short distance from her. Their families were close, and upon her death Frost hailed her as "the great lady of Vermont." Seasoned Timber was Fisher's final novel and it tells the story of fascism rising in small town Vermont, as a beleaguered secondary school is given an enormous gift on exclusionary terms and the town must wrestle with it. It was written as World War II was about to begin. Red cloth with gilt lettering on spine; a very good copy with a sunned spine, lacking a dust jacket. A spectacular association, perhaps a novel that is again timely, and Fisher's deserved recognition continues to increase.
