Note: James Staats Forbes was a Scottish railway engineer, railway administrator and connoisseur of art. Starting as a draughtsman in the office of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, he eventually became general manager of railways in the Netherlands, London and the South-East of England, as well as the holder of many other board posts. During his lifetime he amassed a huge collection of paintings, particularly works of the Barbizon and 19th century Dutch Schools. Forbes was the uncle of the painter Stanhope Forbes, and father of the zoologist William Alexander Forbes. He married Ann Bennet in 1851 and had three children. After his death, his executors chose to sell his painting collection in parts to avoid depressing the prices. Selling exhibitions were held at the Grafton Galleries in 1905 and in Brighton in 1908.
