Société Céramique Maastricht - Henri Breetvelt - Vase...

The monumental vase is executed in dark reddish-brown glazed earthenware and on the front decorated with a finely painted portrait of the Flemish master Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641), based on one of his well-known self-portraits. Van Dyck belongs to the foremost portrait painters of the Flemish Baroque and was, among other things, active at the English court of King Charles I. The depiction is particularly characteristic: Van Dyck is portrayed with his long, wavy hair, moustache and beard and a striking white lace collar. The portrait is executed in the painterly style that is characteristic of the historicizing decorations of Société Céramique Maastricht. The vase bears on the underside the blue factory mark of Société Céramique Maastricht. The size of about 78 cm makes this an exceptionally monumental example. The decoration can be attributed to Henri Breetvelt (1864–1923), who worked in Maastricht for Société Céramique in the early 20th century. Comparable large portrait vases by Breetvelt are known from this period. Dating: circa 1902–1906. Condition: very good. Only minimal signs of aging and a few light scratches appropriate to the age. No flakes, no cracks and no restorations. PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO THE SIZE AND WEIGHT, PICKUP ONLY (Schiedam), OR you may use the delivery service of Brenger.nl
