SOREL (Charles). The Comic History of Francion, or the Deceits, Subtleties, Bad Temperaments, Folly, and All the Other Vices of Certain People of This Century, Naively Depicted. Paris, Claude Griset, 1635. In-8, light calfskin, double gilt rule, decorated spine, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). A famous comic and satirical novel first published in 1623. This edition is based on the second edition (1626) in eleven books, a version corrected by Sorel for fear of suffering the same fate as Théophile de Viau, who was sentenced to death in 1623 upon the publication of *Le Parnasse satyrique*. Sorel would publish a third version of his text in twelve books in 1633; this version would undergo multiple reprints, making *Francion* one of the most widely read novels of the 17th century. A fine copy bearing, in a box on the spine, the monogram of Jean-Jacques Barillon de Morangis, attorney to the king at the Châtelet and counselor to Parliament (OHR, pl. 309). Foxing; a corner stain on the first 30 leaves.
