Spanish School (XX) - The Peasants' Concert

Spanish School, second half of the 20th century Harvest Concert — 1977 Authorship: Spanish School Title: Harvest Concert Technique: oil on canvas Date: 1977 Signature / inscription: signed “Plaza” and dated “77” in the lower left corner Canvas dimensions: 73 × 92 cm Overall dimensions with frame: 77 × 96 cm Style: expressionist figuration of post-impressionist origin Provenance: private collection Description A singular oil on canvas dated 1977 and signed “Plaza,” conceived as a vibrant rural life scene in which the workers’ rest becomes a small improvised concert in the middle of the countryside. Under the breadth of a bright sky and in front of the golden expanse of the cereal fields, several peasants gather beside a cart. Far from depicting rest after work alone, the scene seems to capture one of those spontaneous moments when music breaks the harshness of the day and turns a few minutes of rest into a collective celebration. The central group is articulated as a true allegory of popular music and communal life. The figures appear to play, listen, talk, and support each other, forming a closed human circle within which the landscape continues to unfold around them. Thus the work captures something profoundly universal: the capacity of music to appear where there is apparently no stage, audience, or ceremony. A kind of peasant jam session, born spontaneously among workers, in which the field becomes, for a few moments, a concert hall. Brushwork, material and expression The pictorial language possesses a strong personality. The surface is built with a loose, impasted, gestural brushstroke, combined with broad applications with a spatula. The artist leaves visible the brushstrokes, the dragging of matter, and, in certain areas, the very weave of the canvas. The landscape occasionally approaches abstraction. The sky unfolds through long undulations of whites, creams, very pale blues and pinks, while the fields are resolved with an extensive range of yellows, ochers and earth tones. This material freedom contributes to the painting a post-impressionist-rooted sensitivity, although the deformation of the figures, the vigor of the drawing, and the emotional prominence of color also bring the work closer to the Spanish expressionist figuration of the second half of the 20th century. The human group The figures constitute the true heart of the composition. Faces, hands, and bodies are described with dark, nervous outlines, deliberately distant from academic representation. The artist seeks character before anatomical perfection. The characters crowd against one another beside the wheel of the cart, forming a compact and dynamic mass. The large wheel at the far right functions as a visual closure of the scene and reinforces the sense that we are witnessing a moment paused amid a movement or workday. In the background, two figures move away across the fields, introducing depth and reminding us that working life continues beyond this brief musical interlude. Music, work and everyday life One of the greatest attractions of the work lies precisely in that coexistence of work and celebration. For centuries, music and agricultural labor were deeply related: mowing songs, work chants, impromptu gatherings, and small musical moments accompanied rural community life. Harvest Concert turns that universe into the true subject of the painting. We do not find a formal concert, but perhaps something more beautiful: music created among friends and colleagues during a break in the day, without a stage or audience, simply for the pleasure of sharing it. That reading lends the scene an almost allegorical dimension: faced with the immensity of the landscape and the harshness of work, music appears as a space of rest, community, and freedom. Signature and authorship The work is clearly signed “Plaza” and dated “77” in the lower left corner. The full identity of the artist remains to be determined, which is why the painting is prudently presented as the Spanish School, second half of the 20th century. The signature constitutes, however, an interesting avenue of open investigation for the future owner. Condition report General condition in line with its age. Craquelure and irregularities are observed, mainly in areas with heavier impasto, in addition to small signs of the passing of time. The painting retains a surface especially rich in impasto, drag marks, brushstrokes and spatula applications, essential to understand its visual language. Canvas dimensions: 73 × 92 cm Overall dimensions with frame: 77 × 96 cm The frame is included as a gift and will not be subject to claims.
