(20) pieces total, Bandana community, late 20th-early 21st century, spontaneous glazed earthenware, utilitarian pieces featuring hand-painted multi-color foliate inspired decoration, to include: a large serving dish (2 1/2 x 14 3/4 in.); a small serving dish (2 x 11 1/4 in.); a large footed serving bowl (4 1/2 x 11 1/2 in.); a small footed serving bowl (3 5/8 x 9 3/8 in.); a lidded vegetable dish (9 x 9 1/8 x 9 1/8 in.); a covered soup tureen (no ladle) (8 1/2 x 9 3/4 x 9 3/4 in.); (7) plates (each approximately 8 1/2 in.); and (5) mugs; all signed to underside. Stanley Mace Andersen has been making pottery in the Bandana community since the early 1980s. He moved to the area for an Artist Residency at Penland School of Craft. Stan works with earthenware clay and primarily makes utilitarian ware for the table and kitchen. He uses the Maiolica technique in decorating his pots and fires them in an electric kiln. Stan wants his pottery to become part of the daily flow of an individual’s domestic life and to contribute to the enjoyment of preparing, serving, and presenting food. His style is defined by the expression of line, color, patterns, and their relationship to the pottery forms. He paints his pots quickly and directly on the raw glazed surface, creating liquid flowing lines, splashes of color, and overlaps of brushstrokes that he hopes result in a feeling of exuberance and casual spontaneity.
