Due to their beautiful colour, precious corals have held a firm place in the history of jewellery for millennia. Their dense calcareous skeleton polishes exceptionally well and serves as the basis for pearls, carvings, and other artfully crafted pieces of jewellery. The identification of jewelry corals is a science in itself. Only a few of the world’s known coral species are suitable for jewelry making due to their size, density, and coloration. Among the most significant is the precious coral Corallium rubrum, native to the Mediterranean, which has been used since ancient times for precious pieces of jewellery and artisanal crafts. Since it grows only a few millimeters per year, larger specimens are particularly rare. This necklace consists of 49 impressive, large beads made of Mediterranean coral. The hand-cut beads display a uniform, beautiful salmon-pink colour with very few natural surface markings. The beads increase evenly in size toward the center. The central bead reaches a diameter of more than 15.0 mm, highlighting the exceptional quality of the raw material used. A clasp made of yellow gold and another coral bead provides a harmonious finish to the piece of jewellery. We had the necklace professionally restrung. During this process, the pearl thread and thread holders were replaced. In addition, we commissioned a gemmological report confirming the authenticity of the coral used.
