Sumatran Batak Bone Vessel & Magician's Divination Calendar

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, Toba Batak. A divination porhalaan calendar of buffalo bone incised with a serpent, geometric bands, and symbolic devices, the surface ruled into thirty vertical columns for days and twelve horizontal divisions for months. Fitted with a carved hardwood stopper in the form of a seated figure astride an abstract quadruped, a bird surmounting the head, with openwork scroll supports. The hollow form and stopper indicate use as a container as well. Reading a porhalaan was the province of the datu, the ritual specialist who consulted it to determine auspicious timing for hunting, ceremonies, and other undertakings rather than to record the passage of time.
