SWEDEN. Death of the King Silver Medal, 1632. Gustav II Adolf. NGC MS-62. Hild-188; Delzanno-275; Bruun-17403. Diameter: 79 mm. Weight: 152 gms. By Sebastian Dadler (SD). Engraved by Dadler in Dresden in 1634. Dark, multicolor toning with golden hues hugs and enhances the devices. A razor-sharp strike with perfection in each detail including the punched commas in the reverse legend. Commiserating the death of Gustav Adolf, this hefty silver medal is rich in propagandic imagery: the obverse shows the dead king lying in full armor, in the background his army continuing his cause and chasing away an enemy, while angels guide his soul towards the heavens. On the Reverse the king drives a chariot as he crushes Catholicism in the form of a female figure with a dragon's tail and a pope's hat. Above him two female figures, freedom of religion and justice personified, lower a garland on to his head. A stunning combination of rarity, artistry, superb condition, historic importance and sheer size. Estimate: €8,000 - €12,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection.
