Black/Gold Frame Part of the Don’t Look Back Series Mixed Media on Reverse Canvas In Don’t Look Back Series ‘Matteo’, Dutch artist Swen van der Sangen introduces a bold new body of work that turns convention inside out. Painted directly onto the back of the canvas, the piece exposes what is normally hidden: raw linen, wooden stretcher bars, staples and construction become an integral part of the artwork itself. Deep ultramarine blue dominates the composition, applied with expressive strokes, splashes and drips. Against this intense backdrop, the classical male figure is rendered in spontaneous black linework. Refined and sculptural yet deliberately unfinished, the figure creates a powerful tension between classical beauty and contemporary rebellion. The exposed wooden stretcher bars cut straight through the composition, giving the work its architectural and unmistakably raw character. Nothing is concealed or polished away. Instead, Van der Sangen celebrates the structure behind the surface transforming the reverse side of a traditional canvas into the front. Masculine and unapologetically raw, Matteo has a commanding presence. The combination of vivid blue, natural canvas, exposed wood and graphic black lines makes it a striking statement piece for any modern interior. The black and gold frame adds a sophisticated finish while preserving the rebellious energy at the heart of the work. Graduating from the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts in 2014, Van der Sangen brings a decade of experience in luxury fashion design to his visual art. His instinct for material, proportion and contrast is evident throughout the Don’t Look Back series, where traditional craftsmanship meets a freer, more instinctive way of painting.
