(t) CHINA. Chihli (Pei Yang). 7 Mace 2 Candareens (Dollar), Year 23

Enticing Chihli Dollar with "Secret Cross" (t) CHINA. Chihli (Pei Yang). 7 Mace 2 Candareens (Dollar), Year 23 (1897). Tientsin (East Arsenal) Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS AU-50. L&M-444; cf. K-186C; KM-Y-65.1; WS-0611. Variety with dragon's eyes as triangles. Displaying exceptional originality, this crown offers mostly pale gray hues and a good deal of brilliance remaining among the protected areas. The wear across the higher points is held to a minimum, making this a wondrous representative of the emission. Furthermore, one notes an interesting cross (+) located just above the tail, before the longer spines begin. This "secret" mark, along with an incuse cross with raised central pellet right below it, centrally located on the tail, are an interesting aspect, especially when compared to the cross composed of five pellets (below the swirl on the fiery pearl) that appears on many of the issues from this year. Estimate: $10,000 - $15,000. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
