Extremely Rare Open Stars Szechuan-Shensi Soviet Dollar Tied for the Finest Seen by PCGS (t) CHINA. Szechuan-Shensi Soviet. Dollar, 1934 (in characters). T'ungchiang Mint. PCGS AU-50. L&M-890; K-808b; KM-Y-513.4; WS-1340. Variety with small, open (pentagram/crisscross) stars. A visually striking type produced under the brief period of the Chinese Soviet Republic, that sees much popularity due to its distinct iconography of a hammer and sickle atop a globe. An issue nearly always found with significant surface defects, the offered example presents an EXCEEDINGLY RARE exception, as attested by its placement alongside a mere two other pieces as finest certified by PCGS of the L&M-890 "open stars" variety. The strike is fairly bold overall, with the central detail essentially complete and only some of the typical strike weakness about the peripheries. Only mild wear is present over the devices, with a touch of brightness to the surfaces but no major detractions. About as fine an example of the variety one could hope to acquire, and an extraordinary opportunity for the connoisseur of Chinese RARITIES. Estimate: $30,000 - $50,000.
