THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, A RARE AND IMPORTANT 18TH CENTURY ‘ROYAL’ LEATHER BOUND BOOK Titled ‘The Book of Common Prayer and Administration of the Sacraments and other rites and Ceremonies of the Church, according to the use of The Church of England’, together with the Psalms of David, Oxford, printed by T. Wright and W. Gill printers to the University and sold by S. Crowther in Paternoster Row, London and by W. Jackson in the High St, Oxford MDCCLXXV (1775), bearing the handwritten inscription ‘This book was presented to the Rev H Browne by the Rev Charles Gerard,Librarian to his late Majesty King George the third on the day of the marriage of the Rev Brown of Horton rectory Bucks to Miss Mary Stone of charges Street Piccadilly on the 26th September 1799’. N.B. this book belonged to his late Majesty King George the Third and was used by the king at the time of the king receiving the holy sacrament in The Chapel Royal St James’s Palace, London, the above Charles Gerard of Magdalen College and many years the highly respected curate of St. Peter’s, Cornhill, London to whose memory the parishioners have erected a tablet, the Rev Browne was indicted to The Rectory of Horton, Bucks, June 10th 1796. Later presentation: To William Hobbs Esq from Amelia Maria Cudaunell Ward in remembrance of Mrs Mariana Spong 13th May 1859,and later, presented to St Luke’s Church Reading, Berks by Major Maurice D.S.O. Grandson of William Hobbs Eq, Christmas, 1910. (approx 24.5cm x 30cm) Condition: slight creasing and scuffs to binding, first marbled page becoming loose, some very slight foxing
