THE GENERAL DIET OF MONCRABEAU THE GENERAL DIET OF MONCRABEAU. To our beloved SALT. [France, 19th century]. A large sheet printed on paper, with an ornate typographic border. A curious, burlesque diploma or certificate issued by the famous Diet of Moncrabeau, a Gascon brotherhood traditionally associated with the “liars” of Moncrabeau. The text, deliberately parodic, announces that the “Officers and Commissioners of the Department of…” have recognized the recipient for his talents in “embellishing stories, by exaggerating and downplaying all events that occur in this earthly world,” and admit him into this facetious order. The document is presented as a humorous imitation of official diplomas and letters patent. A rare printed example of this popular and satirical tradition. Condition: document formerly folded; water stains and spots, particularly in the lower portion; minor damage and wear to the margins; old “65” annotation in pencil.
