“The Library”, José Jiménez Aranda, signed, Spanish School, 19th Century

Descriptio Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 92 x 72 cm. An interior scene depicting a group of scholars in a library, absorbed in reading and studying maps. The composition is set in an environment of natural light filtered through a large window, which illuminates the warm tones of the figures and furniture. José Jiménez Aranda, one of the great exponents of 19th-century Spanish realism, demonstrates in this work his mastery of light and attention to detail in architectural works. The balanced and serene scene conveys the Enlightenment ideal of knowledge and intellectual contemplation. Precise brushwork and restrained colors characterize this painting of a cultured costumbrist theme, close to Sevillian academicism.
