Coherent ensemble of three ancient medical works devoted to pulmonary phthisis and tuberculosis, published between 1792 and 1864. 1. Thomas Reid – Essay on the Nature and Treatment of Pulmonary Phthisis Lyon, J.-B. Delamollière, 1792. First French edition. Translation by Dumas and Petit-Darsson, augmented for the French edition with a preliminary discourse and notes. Also includes a supplement devoted to the use and effects of the frequently repeated emetic. LXXX + 422 pages. This collation corresponds to the bibliographically listed copies. 2. Julien Bonnafox-Demalet – Treatise on the Nature and Treatment of Pulmonary Phthisis Paris, Crapart, Caille et Ravier, An XII – 1804. Original edition. Important treatise entirely devoted to pulmonary phthisis, notably addressing the organization of the lungs, the different forms of phthisis, their causes, and the therapeutic methods of the time. 429 pages, with an analytical table of contents. The 1804 edition and this pagination are confirmed by several bibliographic catalogs. 3. J. Francis Churchill – On the Immediate Cause of Pulmonary Phthisis and Tuberculous Diseases and Their Specific Treatment by Hypophosphites Paris, Victor Masson et Fils, 1864 – Second edition. Important work devoted to tuberculosis and the therapeutic theory of hypophosphites. 966 pages. The three volumes thus constitute a specialized set allowing one to follow over 70 years of evolution in the concepts and treatments of pulmonary phthisis, from the end of the 18th century to the development of medical theories on tuberculosis in the 19th century. Old bindings vary: green, black, and purple, with gilt titles on the spines. Interiors showing foxing, stains, and varying signs of use in relation to age. The texts remain clearly legible.
