Till Sudeck

West German studio pottery by renowned ceramic artists, from the 1960s-1970s. 1. Decorative display bowls (Vide-Poches), Barbara Stehr, Studio pottery Material: clay, light Height: 5 cm, Diameter: 15 cm Glaze: satin gloss, dark brown Decoration: accents in blue, white and red Condition: impeccable This bowl is a work by the renowned German ceramicist Barbara Stehr. The distinctive design is characterized by the high-contrast pairing of a dark shard, often brown or black, with a vividly luminous, abstract glaze progression where fiery red, white, and deep blue meet. Barbara Stehr, born in 1936, studied, among others, with the Bauhaus masters Otto Lindig and Liebfriede Bernstiel and is regarded as one of the most important representatives of German studio pottery in the postwar period. 2. Ikebana vase, Till Sudeck, Studio pottery Material: beige clay Height: 5 cm, Diameter: 8 cm Glaze: glossy, blue and brown speckled Condition: impeccable This object is an Ikebana vase by the German potter Till Sudeck (1926–2014). The exact piece was presented, among other contexts, in a solo show at the Ceramic Museum Berlin. Till Sudeck studied psychology and sinology in Paris in the early 1960s. Inspired by Zen Buddhism and Japanese ceramic art, he moved to the Hamburg University of Fine Arts to train as a potter under Prof. Jan Bontjes van Beek. In 1964 he, together with his wife Janine, ran a renowned workshop in Aumühle near Hamburg. His works are characterized by organic-harmonious forms strongly influenced by Japanese ceramic tradition and the philosophy of Zen Buddhism. The striking, flowing glaze in deep blue and brown tones is a hallmark of his workshop, where his wife Janine played a major role in glaze development. The underside mark: The seemingly East Asian character is actually his distinctive scratched signature (a stylized ligature resembling a branched ‘T’ or the character for ‘tree’ 木 or ‘man’ 夫). 3. Jug-vase, Count of Ortenburg Design: Ursula Beyrau Model number 56/8 Material: dark brown clay Height: 8 cm, Diameter: 7.5 cm Glaze: Bright turquoise blue with flowing color gradients. Jug-vase, BKM Böttger Ceramic Workshop, Studio pottery Design: Inge Böttger Material: dark brown clay Height: 6.5 cm, Diameter: 2-5.5-2.7 cm Glaze: satin-matte, beige Condition: impeccable The abbreviation BKW refers to the signature of the Böttger Ceramic Workshop (also known as Keramische Werkstätten Inge Böttger) from Hamburg-Wandsbek. The workshop was run by the ceramic artist Inge Böttger. Her pieces were produced mainly in the 1960s and 1970s and are notable for these characteristic minimalist forms and textured, earthy or speckled glazes. The signature “BKW” was usually hand-etched into the wet clay on the base. 5.
