Titian (1490-1576), After - The Celestial Venus

Titian (1490-1576), After - The Celestial Venus

The Celestial Venus (Detail after Titian’s "Sacred and Profane Love"). 19th Century Oil on original canvas (wear, signs of age, restored), 118 x 82 cm (+ complimentary frame). This large-scale vertical canvas isolates the central protagonist from Titian’s High Renaissance masterpiece, Amor sacro e amor profano (c. 1514/15, currently housed in the Galleria Borghese, Rome). While Titian’s original composition is famously executed in an extreme horizontal format (approx. 118 x 279 cm) to depict a wedding allegory, this 19th-century academic artist chose a vertical layout to concentrate purely on the female nude. Crucially, the height of 118 cm perfectly mirrors the vertical dimension of Titian's original canvas. This demonstrates that the painter likely executed this copy on a 1:1 scale directly in front of the masterwork in Rome, a common practice for advanced art academy students and Grand Tour artists. In accordance with the Neoplatonic philosophy of the Renaissance humanists (such as Marsilio Ficino), the naked figure paradoxically represents Sacred Love (Amor Sacro / Venus Urania) rather than earthly lust. The Nude Form: Her complete lack of clothing symbolizes unadorned, eternal truth and spiritual beauty, which requires no worldly ornamentation. The Crimson Drappery: She is seated upon a rich purple-red cloak, a classic color signaling her divine majesty and noble status. The Incense Burner: In her elevated left hand, she holds a small, smoking vessel. In the original iconographic scheme, she uses this to fan the eternal flames of divine, celestial love toward the heavens. The Fountain/Sarkophagus: She leans against an ancient Roman sarcophagus converted into a water fountain, symbolizing life and love overcoming death. During the 19th century, creating faithful, high-quality replicas of High Renaissance masters was a vital pillar of academic training. The execution of the skin tones (incarnadine) demonstrates a thorough study of Venetian colorism, though the dramatic rendering of the cloud-heavy background carries a slightly romanticized, 19th-century stylistic footprint. In contemporary interior architecture, a large-format classical figurative work of this caliber is no longer viewed as a mere tool to soften minimalist spaces, but as a crucial instrument of aesthetic synthesis. Rather than working against the stark geometry, clean lines, and neutral envelopes of modern design, the canvas enters into a sophisticated, symbiotic relationship with its environment. It does not compensate for the minimalism—it completes it. By pairing the grand scale and fluid, historical lines of the classical nude with smooth, contemporary surfaces like concrete and glass, designers achieve a powerful architectural friction. The two worlds do not compete; instead, they lock together in a museum-like dialogue, heightening the emotional impact of the modern volume while granting the historical masterpiece a striking, entirely renewed relevance. Offered with no reserve price. The lot is available for free local pickup in Paris. Alternatively, worldwide shipping can be arranged via a specialized fine art courier. #thinkagain_art
