TJAYANKA WOODS, Ilkuwaratjara, 2003

TJAYANKA WOODS Pitjantjatjara language, 1935 - 2014 Ilkuwaratjara, 2003 acrylic on canvas 88.5 x 179 cm bears inscription verso: IRRTYW03096, Tjayanka Woods, Ilkuwaratjara, 2003 PROVENANCE Irrunytju Arts Centre, Western Australia, Cat No. IRRTYW03096 Cromwell's Auctioneers and Appraisers, Irrunytju Fundraising Art Auction, Sydney, 11 August 2003, Lot 7 Private Collection, New South Wales Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Irrunytju Arts Centre Tjayanka Woods is a senior Pitjantjatjara artist born around 1935 near Kalaya Pirti (Emu Water), close to Mimili and Wataru in the APY Lands of South Australia. Her practice is grounded in the Tjukurpa of her family and the Country to which she holds deep cultural and ancestral connections. Through her paintings, Woods records the journeys of ancestral figures across the landscape, connecting significant sites with stories of family, food and cultural knowledge. This work depicts Minyma Kutjara Tjukurpa (Two Sisters Dreaming) as the sisters travel through Country close to Irrunytju, the Country of Woods' father. During their journey, the sisters stop at Ilkuwaratjara, where they cut a particularly straight punu (wood) to make a digging stick. The younger sister becomes homesick, but her older sister reassures her, telling her that she is taking her to meet her family. Continuing their journey, the sisters dig for ninu (bilby), eventually finding enough kuka (meat) for a good meal. Through this ancestral narrative, Woods maps a deeply personal and culturally significant landscape, bringing together Tjukurpa, family and her enduring connection to her father's Country. © TJAYANKA WOODS / Copyright Agency, 2026
