Tony Solara presents us in this seascape at the marina with a dynamic navigation scene, starring a sailboat that advances over a rough sea under a wide and changing sky. The vessel, with its sails deployed and slightly heeled by the force of the wind, captures the viewer’s attention and conveys an immediate sense of movement, energy, and freedom. The oil-on-panel painting is organized through the contrast between the horizontality of the horizon and the rising lines of the masts and sails. The latter, of great luminosity, stand out against the sky thanks to a combination of whites, bluish greys, and delicate warm reflections. Its painterly treatment reveals particular attention to the folds of the fabric, the tension of the sails, and the network of ropes and rigging, which provide precision and credibility to the scene. The crew, distributed along the vessel, introduces a human scale that allows the dimension of the sailboat and the activity required to steer it to be appreciated. The small bright touches of the clothing contrast with the dark, earthy tones of the hull, built through brushstrokes of ochres, browns, and reddish reflections. However, it is the sea that gives the work much of its character. The water surface is resolved through a succession of short, broken, and superimposed brushstrokes, in which deep blues, turquoise greens, and foamy whites predominate. The impastos suggest the crests of the waves and the changing reflections, creating a surface of great tactile richness. The foam surrounding the hull reinforces the impression that the boat cuts through the water as it advances. The sky, for its part, combines blues, purples, greys and small ochre and yellowish notes applied irregularly to generate a sense of depth and changing luminosity. Tony Solara’s technique stands out for the contrast between the greater definition of the sailboat and the gestural freedom with which the sea and clouds are treated.
