Traditional Japanese folk-art object - Papier-mache

Traditional Japanese Namahage folk-art object from the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture. This special decorative object is inspired by the traditional Namahage culture of the Oga Peninsula, a well-known Japanese folk culture in which figures with demon masks have an important folkloric significance. The object features a striking and expressive red-painted face with large eyes, teeth, and horns. The face is combined with a characteristic long, grass-like covering, giving the piece a highly recognizable and decorative appearance. This is a traditional Japanese folk art / folk craft object, intended as decoration and a collector’s item. It comes with the original base and wooden placard, making the piece even more interesting for collectors of Japanese folk art and traditional Japanese decorations. Dimensions: approximately 18 cm tall. Condition: vintage condition with clear signs of aging and wear. The paint shows wear in several places and minor damage, consistent with age and use. On the handle there are some small damages visible, probably caused by bumps or use. Please view all photos carefully for a full impression of the condition. An interesting decorative collectible for enthusiasts of Japanese folk art, Namahage, Japanese folklore and traditional Japanese handcraft.
