Two beautiful Balinese wood carvings, designed in the distinctive Art Deco style that flourished in Bali from the 1930s under the influence of Western artists. Both sculptures depict traditional Balinese flute players. Bali, Indonesia, circa 1960 Characteristics of the sculptures • Right statue (Elongated flute player): This type of woodcarving is characteristic of Balinese Art Deco. It has a strongly stylized, elegant, and elongated body with flowing, wavy lines. The musician wears a traditional Balinese headdress (udeng) and delicate flowers by the ears. It is carved from a dense, heavy wood such as coromandel wood. • Left statue (Kneeling flute player): This statue shows a more compact, organic design that was also popular in Balinese folk art. The focus here is on the dynamic, rounded contours of the body as the player kneels and leans over his instrument. This piece is presumably made from a lighter, warm-toned wood such as suar wood or teak. Balinese woodcarving of this quality was produced extensively from the mid-20th century onward, for local spiritual purposes as well as for the growing market of international collectors and travelers.
